Build near the city of Mertola, in an archeological area, this new school was built on a Roman cemetery where the remains of many tombs are still visible. The objective was to create a living museum where students could develop an understanding of how the pas has modeled the local environment and their culture. The students embark on a series of projects that are centered on the local archeology, history and environment.

The new school replaced to degenerating buildings. It reflects the strong desire to respect architectural heritage and the surrounding environment. This is done with the design of the buildings and in the way they are used during the learning process.

Many of the approximately 500 students come from neighboring cities and the school tried to consolidate connections and relationships between these communities by using the a community center in the middle of the campus. There is a plan to recover a church nearby for cultural activities.
