Ueno Elementary School, Taito-ku, Tokyo

Important characteristic: permanent and poly-comprehensive instruction center.

Designer: Arch. Shouzoh Uchii

  • Year of construction: 1991
  • Grade level: 7 - 12 years
  • Students: 300

Built in a high-density Tokyo suburb, the school makes good use of the limited surface area available. The land is completely used; the building goes from one border to the next. In the middle of the complex, an ample free area was created to give the sensation of space.

The building was designed to be used by the entire community. One area is for the nursery school, a kindergarten and community center. The school is one of the principle permanent instruction centers in Taito - ku.

The design allows various teaching methods to be used. In the main building, there are classrooms for six grades. Each class is adjacent to an open area for group or individual learning.
