50% of the territory of the Province of Milan is cultivated, extending from the river Adda to the Ticino, including the pre-Alps and the Po valley. The diversity of its soil, dry and permeable in the north and clayey, sandy and humid to the south, allows for a variety of cultivations.
In the northern area, agriculture is organised in small farmhouses, whereas the province's southern area features extensive rice cultivations. A number of farm estates practice organic agriculture, which does not allow for the use of chemical products, but only natural cultivation systems.
Typical products cultivated in the provinces territory include rice, milk, beef, pork, chickens, preserves, and honey. Organic agriculture is also becoming widespread for the production of fruits and vegetables. These products can be purchased directly from the farm estates who produce them.
The following is a selective list of 182 farm estates which sell locally produced foods to the public, as compiled by the province's Agriculture Department.
