The Province of Milan is a local entity representing 134 towns and municipalities, among which is Milan; it administere the vastest metropolitan area in Italy, and is situated in one of the most densely inhabited areas in Europe, with population density of 2000 inhabitants per sq. km, ten times higher than the national average.
Covering an overall area of around 1500 square kilometres, the province of Milan has a population of three million people, representing 32% of the population of Lombardy.
The area of Milan is the capital of ’Italy's creative industry, particularly the tertiary sector, including other fields closely linked to technology and ’innovation, and more recently the health sector, providing ’a broad ranging and varied supply of skilled workers, supported by a robust biotech industry.
The province's territory nonetheless remains over 50% (or 765 sq. km) zoned for agricultural use or wooded areas.
These characteristics make of the province the nation's primary crossroads in the flow of economic and industrial production, offering great opportunities while posing challenges for its overall urban areas.
