The President represents the Province of Milan, summons and presides over the Executive Council, oversees the operation of services and offices and the implementation of council acts. The Presidency has a five-year mandate. The current President was elected in the June 2009 elections.
The Provincial Executive Council, nominated by the President, comprises the councillors who collaborate in its administration, deliberating with committees and undertaking proposals with the Council.
The Provincial Council comprises the elected councillors, along with the President, who is a presiding member. The Council is responsible for fundamental acts regarding guidelines, political and administrative controls and planning, and the approval of related financial plans. The Council elects within its body a Council President, who summons the Council and oversees its work and programs, as well as two Vice Presidents. As a rule, the Council's meetings are open to the public.
The Council operates through the Council Commissions. Members are elected internally based on the proportional representation of political parties.
Sessions of the Council and Commissions are generally open to the public.
